The general cemetery of Noordwijk was laid out in 1829 by contractor Timotheus van Paddenburg from Warmond to a design by Salomon van der Paauw, city architect of Leiden. In 1931, the cemetery on the north and west sides was expanded with terraces in the dunes. Description The oldest part of the cemetery consists of a walled almost square terrain with one straight main axis (north-south). Masonry terraces in the dunes on the north and west sides. From the entrance gate, a gravel path flanked by trees runs in a westerly direction with a transverse axis. The paths give access to the stairs that open up the terraces. The brickwork and stairs of the terraces are made of red brick, the performances are covered with square red tiles. In the center of the western terraces is a semicircular brick staircase. Appreciation The simple early nineteenth-century construction of the Noordwijk cemetery, in combination with the specific terraces from 1931, is of general interest because of its cultural and (garden) architectural-historical value due to its rarity and reasonable degree of integrity.
