Loevestein Castle

One wonders, how many pandemics has this ancient castle lived through? On the big parking lot 10 minutes walking from the castle, camper parking is possible. Makes this an attractive stop on a camper holiday! Or alternatively, in the tourist season you can arrive by river ferry from Gorinchem or Woudrichem (pronounce: Gorkum or Workum). The ancient castle itself is located on the strategic point where the rivers Maas and Waal merge to become the Merwede. It is most famous for the spectacular escape by the political prisoner Hugo Grotius in 1621 in a book chest. Attractive displays about this and other medieval things are available in the castle. There is a cafetaria as well which provides a reasonable lunch and good coffee indoor or outdoor.

Nice kasteel where you can spend about 2 hours (as adult, without kids) nice friendly and informative people.

Visited with my company. Interesting place that played a big role in Dutch history. The guides very knowledgeable. Worth a visit.
