On 17 September 1944 the American 501st Airbone Division landed here. This in connection with Operation Marketgarden. Unfortunately she landed at the wrong castle, they had to be dropped 6km away in Veghel. One parachutist would later become known, Father Sampson. He landed with another parachutist in the moat of the castle. When they helped each other out, he went back to show up his equipment. After the castle was captured from the Germans, the division advanced to the correct drop zone. Father Sampson was left with several injured. He went looking for transport for the injured. When he returned with a number of horse and wagons with Dutchmen on the box, unfortunately the castle was already in German hands. Father Sampson survived the war and died in 1994.
