In 1496 the city council wanted a Sint-Servaas fountain and a well was dug on the Vrijthof to supply the fountain with water. That failed because the well gave too little water. Around 1600, in what was then the Servaasbroek in the Jeker valley, a collecting basin was built around the Sint-Servaas spring and the water was drained via a wooden pipeline to the Vrijthof. It had a hard stone fountain vase in the center, a bronze lid and a statue of a blessing Servatius on top. Around the basin was a marble balustrade bearing the following Latin text: Traveler worship this well that you see here, for it is holy, and whether you are thirsty or have a fever, drink from it, live, farewell. To this end you admonish the familiar name of St. Servatius By the fountain were earthenware cups so that the pilgrims could drink the water

This beautiful fountain was created in 1934 on the north side of the Sint Servaats basilica, very close to today's main entrance. A basalt lava basin by the architect Alphons Boosten with a bronze statue of Sint Servaas, created by the Maastricht artist Charles Vos, who also created the Sint Servaas statue on the world-famous bridge of the same name.
