Oude Salviuskerkje

Christmas 1922, the parishioners of Limbricht exchanged their old Salvius church for a new and larger Salvius church. The old church was withdrawn from worship, but continued to exist. Since it no longer had a clear function, it fell into disrepair. Almost all the furniture and decoration disappeared. In the seventies of the twentieth century a second and definitive restoration started. This provided the opportunity for archaeological and building history research, which provided more clarity about the building history. Now it became demonstrable that this is one of the oldest church buildings in the Netherlands, dating from the tenth century. On December 8, 1977, restorative construction workers were surprised to find fragments of color in the vaults of the apse. A series of paintings were discovered hidden under approximately 20 layers of lime. This discovery turned out to be of great importance. A complete youth cycle of Christ was found, dating from the end of the thirteenth century. In addition, a cycle of the Last Judgment was found in the choir bay, unfortunately incomplete due to damage. Nowhere in the Netherlands has such a complete and early cycle of paintings been preserved. The old Salvius Church thus acquired an important place among our ecclesiastical monuments and thus ranks itself among the hundred most important monuments in the Netherlands.
