Johannes Vermeer "View of Delft" -3 and 4 September 1659- DELFT - A group of scientists has calculated where and when Johannes Vermeer (the Sphinx) made his masterpiece View of Delft. They did this on the basis of the sunlight on the artwork, among other things. Researcher Donald Olson of Texas State University and his colleagues studied the painting for more than a year. The scientists' conclusion is: Vermeer probably painted one of his most famous works on September 3 or 4, 1659, around 8 a.m. Upstairs inn Olson and his team looked at old maps of Delft, used GOOGLE EARTH to find and compare the location of buildings in the painting, and did fieldwork in Delft itself. They also studied the painting in the Mauritshuis in The Hague. The researchers conclude that Vermeer must have stood on the top floor of an inn on the Zuideinde. That place is located just south of the center of Delft. Now it is a lawn surrounded by apartment complexes. Vermeer looked north. The painting includes the Nieuwe Kerk of Delft. The tower is illuminated by the sun at the front right and is shaded at the back left. This means that the light in the painting comes from the southeast, so it is morning. This is confirmed by a clock on the facade of another building. That clock shows that it is about 8:00 am. NOS National News
