Schildkerk The Schildkerk, popularly known as the “Grote Kerk”, has stood in the heart of Rijssen for centuries. The church is a hall church with three naves, completely vaulted in stone. At the end of the 8th century, Lebuines built the first church on this spot. Over the centuries the church has undergone many renovations. The last renovation dates from 1925. The north tuff wall is the oldest and dates back to the 12th century. Inside the church is an organ from 1856, a pulpit from the 18th century and several “benches” from the noble era. The baptismal font is from the 12th century. In the period 1828-1829 a new tower was built on top of an extension of the church. The whole was closed with a classical facade. This gave the Schildkerk its current characteristic appearance. The tower is owned by the civil municipality of Rijssen. The current tower has been a carillon with 25 bells since April 26, 1973. The great promoter of this carillon was former mayor G.J. Smit. On April 6, 1998, this carillon was expanded to 50 sponsored bells, partly on his initiative.
