As they say a hidden jewel. A small, intimate and beautifully appointed little gallery in an unexpected, but up and coming part of the Old South. I went to the finnisage of Kevin Mallon. HIs art is modern, pop, psychedelic; a bit mournful it seemed in the obligatory, unclothed women, without whom it seems no art is possible. There are some post punk, poster style, juxtaposed with his fine line realism I can no longer call it 'can't draw art' and I honestly don't know the popre name for it but, there is a visceral response to them. My favourite was the super realistic bird on wood with a cool surprise. His art feels familiar as if I've seen it on flyers - well there was his flyer, which was why I wanted to go. the image from the poster was the largest piece in the show it was fun. There was one piece that made me think it might possibly be fun to read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and it was, I think I would hate it as a whole book... I found present, subtle, pleasant, social, political comment, commercial, specific yet even in the pictures that seem almost random there is a composition that I found masterful. Unfortunately I missed the performances, the dj was good, the galerie owner is cool, laid back, super open and friendly, the gallery uses the space art combination to present really well, seeing the art fun and I really, really liked the art! I'm looking forward to seeing something else here...
