St. Lambertus Church Mheer, together with Banholt and Noorbeek, spent a long time at the parish Gravenvoer (Belgian Voer region) l heard that belonged to the Diocese of Liège. . In 1658 Mheer (incl. Banholt and Terhorst) was granted the right of "the first and last sacrament". The church is expanded and around 1786 a completely new church building is built. This is built with limited resources and is replaced in 1876 by the current church, designed by Pierre Cuypers, who is known for the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Central Station. Especially the restored portal where the Seven Weeks of Mercy are depicted give the church a unique atmosphere for such a small Limburgish Durpke, the beautiful stained glass windows add heavenly light on sunny days. In the aisle of the Castle Lord and Lady stands the unique Sculpture of St. Gregorius, carved in Africa, patron of the mixed choir St. Gregorius Mheer, who, thanks to Corona, rehearses her parts in the church, at an appropriate distance but still united in Harmony. Banholt and Terhorst also belonged to the parish for a long time. However, the inhabitants of these centers built their own church, which was already completed in 1875. This "Banholt's schism" seems to end in 1881, when Banholt becomes Mheer's rectorate. Since 1937, after a long church struggle, Banholt (with Terhorst) has been an independent parish that follows a more Calvinist line, as can also be seen from the uniform sober wooden crosses on the Vrijthof in Bannet. In the 1960s the church was renovated or rather destroyed by a likewise 'Protestant' pastor, who caused great damage with his whitewashed madness. Fortunately, all of this has been restored and even the life-size Crucifix, completely restored by the Kruisen en Kapellen foundation under the leadership of Bea Tilanussen, is hanging in its place above the altar. The whole again forms a friendly and welcoming whole that you rarely find in such a well-maintained condition in our lowlands populated by iconoclasts. The last family-like castle behind it is also worth seeing, especially now that our new Baron Diederik de Loë has opened the hiking trails across his lands to everyone. (P. S. Show your appreciation for this generous gesture by respecting the signs * Private *, after all, you are literally walking in someone's backyard, a Baron is only a person who needs his right to rest ...) Our village does its best to keep all this in good condition and tidy for the visitors, would you be so kind as to contribute your stone, and keep your snacks packaging with you until you come across a suitable waste bin? Have fun in our exceptionally lovely Hill Country Village with Added Value, and thank you for your cooperation to keep this unique environment clean 🖖🖖🏻🖖🏾
