Founded in 1578 by the Spanish Franciscan friars, this ladrillo (brick) Catholic church is one of the oldest churches of the Philippines. The Quipayo Church (Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception) was once an important poblacíon (town) and was the main parish of a big area that covered the now bigger towns of Libmanan, Calabanga, Siruma and Bombon. Through the centuries, the parish has shrunk in size and influence and Quipayo itself became a barrio (village) of Calabanga. The locals though are proud of this heritage and its place in history. Quipayo in fact means "The Head" or "for the Head" While the Church has preserved its original brick wall and structure, other sections have seen numerous reconstruction and renovation, after earthquakes, typhoons and other calamities,. The original altar has given way to a new modern looking replacement. Roof, ceiling, floors are have been totally changed. The belfry has also been damaged and replaced. The church grounds also features an ancient dome-shaped brick "garage" for horse carriages used in earlier times. And a rectory with an azotea (balcont) that offers a commanding view of the place. Chanced on this venerable church, one of oldest I learned later, in a road trip going to Naga after doing some work in Calabanga. It appears that much of the antique infrastructure is still there and it's a good thing that the church interior is clean. That is added serenity in the architecture. I'm a fan of old churches because it gives you some physical connection with some parts of history. Maybe though some accent lighting is put in place inside the church to highlight it's structure too. It has a wide courtyard. I hope the landscaping is maintained.

A pilgrims' site, esp. during Holy Week.
