Emotikon Film (10/05/2020)
The long post-war years Karol Olgierd Borchardt was an immensely popular figure in Gdynia. He himself jokingly said that at one time there were only men in Gdynia whom he taught, teaches or will teach. To all these adepts of marine sciences, one should add their fiancées, wives, mothers and it can be assumed that the whole of Gdynia knew who this tall, handsome man with a lush hair was, wandering the streets of the city with a brisk step. K.O. Borchardt was associated with Gdynia from 1930, but he was still a student of the Maritime School in Tczew (1925-1928). At that time, he was arriving on the training ship "Lwów", which, unable to reach the quay, because it had not been built yet, stood in the roadstead waiting for students to go ashore in a lifeboat. Throughout the pre-war period, Gdynia was the home port of Borchardt, although - as it happens in the life of a sailor - he spent more time at sea than on land. From here, in August 1939, the last training voyage of "Dar Pomorza" set sail. He returned here in 1949, after years of war and post-war emigration, and lived on the top, third floor of the villa at 16 Mickiewicza Street in Kamienna Góra. In a modest apartment and in Spartan conditions, he lived 37 years, and he also spent his life there on May 20, 1986. This location of the apartment, combined with the popularity of its tenant, was of great importance. It was enough for a reader from the interior of the country to address the letter "Cpt. Borchardt - lives at most in Gdynia ”and the correspondence reached the addressee without any problems. And he himself valued his apartment the most for the panoramic view from the windows overlooking the four corners of the world, including the beloved sea and ships waiting to enter the Gdynia port, and even the "Dar Pomorza" mooring at the Pomeranian wharf.
