The town of Żerków is situated on the highest hill of the Żerkowski Embankment. The coat of arms of the city of Łódź refers to the noble Górka family, who owned the city in the 16th and early 17th centuries. Żerków was granted city rights in 1283 by the Duke of Greater Poland Przemysł II. In the 16th century, the town developed thanks to trade, as well as privileges granted to the guilds of brewers, potters and shoemakers.
After the Second Partition of Poland in 1793, Żerków was absorbed by Prussia. Due to the proximity of the border of the Russian partition, border smuggling flourished here. The city regained its freedom thanks to the victorious Greater Poland Uprising (1918-1919).
The town center and also a tourist attraction is the market square, which used to be the "heart" of the trade settlement. In the middle of the market square, among the greenery, there is a monument from 1954 dedicated to the "Fallen for Freedom". It is situated at the highest point of this picturesque city.
