The Old Lublin Gate was one of three - next to the Lwowska and Szczebrzeska Gate - leading to Zamość. It was also the oldest gate, because its construction was completed in 1599, although in the form of a simple passage situated between bastions IV and V it had been functioning since 1587. A year later Jan Zamoyski through this gate carried an Austrian archduke who was taken prisoner in the Battle of Byczyna Maksymilian, a pretender to the Polish throne. The gate has been walled in almost from the beginning of its existence - probably not to weaken the fortress's fortifications. At that time, the Lwowska and Szczebrzeska Gate were used. It was reopened at the end of the 18th century and was open until the 1820s, when it was built between bastions No. V and VI of the New Lublin Gate. In the old gate, prison casemates were arranged, which existed until the liquidation of the Zamość fortress in 1866 and the partial demolition of the gate. The original appearance of the Old Lublin Gate regained in 1977-1980, and after renovation in 2007-2009 it houses a gallery and a restaurant. The front, or north elevation of the gate is topped with a Mannerist summit with a bas-relief of the Polonia personification, under which a Latin inscription by Hetman Jan Zamoyski was placed.
