Żagań is one of the most interesting towns in the Lubusz part of Lower Silesia. According to accounts, the city was founded around 700 by Princess Żaganna, whose mother was Wanda, and grandfather the legendary king Krak. The city was founded probably in the second half of the 12th century in the vicinity of an existing defensive stronghold guarding the crossing of Bóbr. This settlement occupied the area of today's Old Żagań. The first written mention of it comes from 1202 and referred to Żagań as a castellan stronghold. In the 13th century, a market place was located in today's Old Town and a city map was laid out. The rapidly developing Żagań around the middle of the 13th century received city rights along with the privileges resulting therefrom. From the last years of this century to 1472, the city was the capital of the Żagań principality ruled by the Silesian Piasts. The last of them was Jan II Crazy who sold Żagań to the Saxons. From then on, the owners were the Wettins from Saxony and the Habsburgs from Austria. In 1627, the principality of Żagań and its capital were purchased by the commander of the Austrian imperial army Albrecht Wallenstein. He initiated the reconstruction of both the prince's seat and the entire city. His work was continued in the following centuries by subsequent owners of princes from the Lobkowitz and Biron families. During the reign of Courland Prince Peter Biron falling at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, the castle was rebuilt into a palace and buildings accompanying the owner's headquarters were erected in the city. One of them was the palace building of the prince's camera built in the 18th century in the classical style. It housed the rooms and flats of the Żagań administration. The camera was a multi-story building with a mansard roof. In its facades stood out a portico with four columns crowned with a triangular tympanum, in which a cartouche with the coat of arms of the Duchy of Żagań from the time of the Biron rule was placed. Currently, the historic building is the seat of the District Court in Żagań.
