The Słonim Elementary School is also a pedagogical and cultural institution, as it also houses a public school and library. The school is named after Bartłomiej Pitiskus, a sixteenth-century mathematician, born in Słonem, in 1561 in the family of a village teacher. This mathematician is known for inventing the slide rule used by technicians and engineers around the world until the invention of electronic calculators. A large slider was placed in front of the school entrance to commemorate this fact, describing its inventor.
