Great place for prayers, especially on 25th Nissan, yahrtzeit of the Divrei Chaim.

An interesting fact is that in the area facing ul. Rybacka, there are no burials at the place where the matzevot were erected. The area was purchased by the Jewish Community before World War II with the intention of expanding the cemetery, but it was not done in time. Matzevot to this area were brought after the war from various nearby Jewish cemeteries, destroyed by the Germans. The ones in better condition were erected, and the fence was built from the worse ones.

Nowy Sacz Jewish cemetery - a Jewish cemetery The first Jewish cemetery in Nowy Sącz was located near the synagogue. The current one was created at the end of the 19th century at ul. Tarnowska with the entrance from ul. Fishing. It is fenced with a wall. The tombstones called matzevot are arranged according to Jewish custom to the south-east, i.e. towards Jerusalem. There are engraved stars of David and inscriptions in Hebrew. Until the end of the 19th century, only the names of the deceased were on the matzevot, with time, surnames began to be given. The matzevot also contain reliefs symbolizing the significance of the deceased in the Jewish community. During World War II, the Nazis used matzevot as building material and for paving the streets of Sądecki. For the most part, gravestones were erected in the cemetery after 1945. From the old tombs, the grave of the deceased tzadik - the miracle worker Robbe Chajim Halberstam - is visited by Jews from Hasid from around the world on the anniversary of his death. During the years of occupation during World War II, the cemetery was a place of mass murders of Jewish people as well as Poles. On June 18, 1959, a monument commemorating the victims was unveiled, with the text "Victims of Nazi barbarism and heroes of the fight for freedom on the Polish family 1939-1945" engraved on it.

An atmospheric place, full of history

An amazing place in the city illustrating and raising awareness that the Jewish community in Nowy Sącz existed for centuries and lived among us. It is worth visiting and stopping at least for a moment to reflect on human fate.
