Fantastic historical memory site, which I just discovered with the help of my family, who took me there on a trip from Tarnow. It turns out that among the more than 100 soldiers buried there is my ancestor on the part of my dad - my great-grandfather's brother, who fought with the German invader during the war
One of the most famous in the VI District of Tarnów, also known as the cemetery of Polish legionnaires. Located on the Kopaliny hill (398 m above sea level) near the village of Lichwin. Designed by Siegfried Haller and Heinrich Scholz. Area 2221 sq m
Set on a rectangular plan, divided into two parts. In the lower one, rows of graves are symmetrically arranged, in the upper one the layout of the graves is adapted to the apse located on the axis of the chapel entrance. The plan of the whole structure resembles the layout of the church with a separate nave and presbytery.
In 20 mass graves and 275 individual graves, 511 soldiers died mainly in December 1914 (in the Battle of Łowczówek) and in the first days of May 1915, including 272 Austro-Hungarian army (148 known by name), many of them Poles from 1 5th Infantry Regiment of the Polish Legions.
Place of remembrance. Scales for reflection. I recommend especially during independence rallies. Renovated, it is worth visiting, stopping, thinking and praying for those thanks to whom we have a free Poland. Glory to the fallen.
One of the most important places in the country. The area around the cemetery is the place of the battle of Polish legionnaires, the future flower of our armed forces. They fought here, for example, Rydz-Śmigły or Sosnkowski. Austrian, Russian and Polish soldiers were buried in the cemetery. Interestingly, Gen. Gustaw "Gryf" Łowczowski ordered to be buried here.
N 49.9071 E 20.9673 - good access, narrow asphalt path, parking. It is called the cemetery of legionnaires. There are soldiers here (mostly legionnaires of the First Brigade) bravely fighting off Russian infantry attacks on December 22 - 25 (Christmas). 1914 A few interesting memorial plaques are founded on the cemetery, funded by comrades, families, society and municipal authorities.
