Doły cemetery

A bit neglected but worth a visit, especially due to the grave of Katarzyna Kobro.

The Lodz Orthodox Cemetery st. Alexander Nevsky in Doły covers an area of ​​over five hectares. It is situated in the southern part of the Doły cemetery complex, bordering on the north with ul. Smutna, from the south of ul. By telephone, from the east with the Roman Catholic Cemetery of St. Wincentego and from the west with the Communal Cemetery. The cemetery does not stand out with its planning or any exceptional tombstones. It is worth seeing because of the people buried here who have written a permanent page in the history of Łódź. Built on an elongated rectangular plan, it has the only main alley paved with cobblestones, lined with poplars, leading from the main gate at Telephone. The dominant feature of the Orthodox cemetery in Doły is the Chapel of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary - the work of Franciszek Chełmiński, a city architect. The architect used heavily modernized Byzantine-Romanesque forms here and made the chapel resemble post-Byzantine churches built on the plan and outline of an isosceles cross. Walking along the main avenue, right next to the border wall, there is a grave worth special attention of Katarzyna KOBRO-STRZEMIŃSKA (1898 - 1951) - one of the most outstanding sculptors in the interwar period, and her daughter Jakobina (Niki) Strzemińska (1936 - 2001), doctor of medicine, writers, promoters of the art of their parents: the sculptor Katarzyna Kobro and the painter Władysław Strzemiński.
