The first mention of Lubniewice comes from 1287, when the name of the city appeared in the documents of Prince Przemysław II. In 1808 Lubniewice received city rights. In 1945, as a result of international arrangements, the town was incorporated into Poland, and the population was displaced to Germany. The city has a small Market Square (Plac Wolności) with the Fountain of Good Neighborhood as its focal point. It is an unveiled monument in 1994, as a symbol of good-neighborly Polish-German border communes.
