It takes about 5 minutes to look at and read the small plaques (in Polish and English). Well worth a quick stop as it’s outside, free, interesting history, and on a very beautiful street right on the water. Many people walk right by and don’t know what they are.
Collection of old Prussian statues displayed outside the archaeological museum (waterfront side). #letsguide, #poland, #gdansk, #visitgdansk, #oldtown, #river, #motława, #motlawariver, #waterfront, #statues, #museum, #długiepobrzeże
2 metre tall statues made of granite by the Old Prussian civilisation that lived in this region before being wiped out by the Teutonic Knights.
Out of the 21 statues left in the world, these 4 are the largest collection in one place. Check out the archaeological museum that these sit outside of for more about the tribes that made these.
Worth a look as you're strolling along the river.
Ancient people who lived in northern Poland for thousands of years-stone carvings left in modern times known as "old Prussians". Unfortunately, these tribes were annihilated by the Teutonic Knights in the 12th century, leaving only historical legacy. 21 stone statues are scattered around the museum. Like locally known as Stara Baba Pruska or "Old Prussian Hague". The statues are mostly carved from granite or sandstone rock. They feature a warrior with a trumpet (a ritual drinking vessel) on the one hand, and a sword on the other, or perhaps a religious figure with arms folded across his chest. Some also include details such as belts, necklaces, quivers or shields. Some scholars consider these stones to be border signs for local communities.
Stone cult sculptures are the remains of Prussian culture of the IX-XI centuries. Interestingly, they resemble the so-called stone women from the steppe part of Ukraine, some of which in the time of creation date back to the third millennium BC.
