Castle in ruins. It will probably collapse completely soon
It is a pity that nobody cares about such places.
not much left of it. a place to visit rather than visit.
The village of Majkowice is located in the south-eastern part of the Łódź Province, just 40 km east of Radomsko. Today's ruins of a defensive complex and a defensive manor come from the second half of the 16th century and were funded by the Majkowski-Nagodzic family. It was the third defense in history to function in this place. The beginnings of fortifications in this village date back to the thirteenth century, and the buildings erected in the first half of the fourteenth century are attributed to the Nagodzic-Jelitczyk family.
The brick and stone fortification was erected on an artificial hill, approx. 1 km from the Pilica River on the eastern side and in close proximity to the northern side of the lake. It was therefore a convenient area for the location of residential and defense buildings. Mistakenly called a castle, it was never a castle, but rather a residential mansion with defensive buildings, including a defensive wall and a tower in the north-west part. The buildings, rebuilt and extended over two centuries, did not have a regular shape, even the defensive tower at the base was round, in the middle part octagonal, and at the top, square.
The defensive manor house in Majkowice, also mentioned in the chronicles as the Surdęga castle (castrum Surdęga), was finally destroyed in 1702 by the Swedish army, and was never rebuilt. During World War II (1944), the area was rebuilt and the hill was liquidated due to the construction of defensive fortifications in the vicinity of the Pilica River.
To this day, mainly the ruins of the tower have survived, with characteristic keyhole-shaped windows, which were rather a decorative element, although they could also have defensive functions. From the residential mansion, buildings within the fortifications, only the so-called inselbergs.
There are no documented sources indicating the defensive use of the manor, however, an interesting story of a Jagiellonian knight from the Nagodzic-Jelitczyk family - Florian the Gray, who may live in Majkowice or the surrounding area, is connected with this castle. During the fights with the Teutonic Knights at Płowce (1331), Florian was seriously wounded. Lying half-dead on the battlefield, she held her insides in her hand. King Władysław Łokietek, who was riding a horse on the battlefield after the end of the battle, saw Florian holding his entrails among the many dead bodies. As a proof of heroism and bravery, Łokietek bestowed Florian with numerous land grants throughout the country.
