The regiment was formed at the beginning of 1919 as the 3rd Regiment of Greater Poland Uhlans, but in August it was renamed the 17th Regiment of Greater Poland Uhlans. In the interwar period, the regiment was stationed in garrisons in Gniezno and from 1922 in Leszno. The branch was an organizational unit of the following: the 1st Wielkopolska Driving Brigade; VII Driving Brigade; VII Cavalry Brigade; "Poznań" Cavalry Brigades; Wielkopolska Cavalry Brigade. In the spring of 1919, he fought on the northern front of Wielkopolska Form. On January 20, 1920, the regiment's soldiers were the first Polish soldiers to enter Bydgoszcz. In March 1920, the regiment was transported from Gniezno, via Vilnius to Sarny, from where he set off on a Kiev expedition. On May 7 he entered Kiev. The next battles are Starosielce, Rudni - Kowanka, Radziwiłłów. During the 1920 campaign, the regiment captured: 2 field artillery guns (3 inches), the banner of the Horse Artillery Dynasty, a dozen or so KM and about 120 Soviet prisoners of war captured. Losses in the war of 1919 - 1920 amounted to: 8 dead officers and cadets and about 160 rank-and-file. On May 6, 1939, the regiment was given the name "17th Regiment of Greater Poland Uhlans named after King Bolesław the Brave." 1.IX. joined the campaign. fending off the German attack in the vicinity of Rydzyna and effectively counterattacking. On the night of September 9-10 he won Walewice. The last charge of the 17th Regiment of Greater Poland Uhlans took place on September 16 in the Kampinos Forest, when he crossed Bzura with all his strength in the area of ​​Witkowice, suffering heavy losses. On September 19, after a fierce battle, the regiment captured the Sieraków by destroying many tanks and enemy cars, and took several dozen prisoners of war. Attack on Laski failed. 20.IX. the regiment reached Warsaw. In September 1939, 14 officers, 3 cadets, 32 non-commissioned officers and 149 private soldiers were killed. During the Nazi occupation, 15 officers, 2 cadets and 2 non-commissioned officers were murdered.
