Stanisław Staszic, who was born in Piła in 1755, was not only a priest but also an activist of the period of enlightenment with universal interests. The geographer, geologist, philosopher, as well as the writer and publicist, performed various state functions during the Duchy of Warsaw and the Kingdom of Poland. He was, among others, minister of state and deputy minister of education. From 1811, he was the owner of eight villages purchased in the vicinity of Hrubieszów, but already in 1816 he handed these goods over to the peasants who used them, thus creating the Hrubieszów Agricultural Society. The official act of establishing the Tsar Alexander I Society was signed in 1822. On the hundredth anniversary of this event, in Hrubieszów, a monument was erected at 3 Maja Street at the initiative of the city residents. The contractor of the sandstone monument was the Zamojski stonemason I. Kuszawski.
