The Monument to Piłsudski's Fallen Legionnaires - the Companions of Arms is an important place for many Tomaszów families. On the plinth of the monument there are a number of plaques commemorating the names of legionnaires and soldiers fighting for sovereign Poland in the years 1918-21, who went to war with Tomaszów Mazowiecki. Among the dozens of names you can also find the name of my great-grandfather - Sergeant Wladyslaw Błaszczyk. The monument dates back to 1924, when on the tenth anniversary of the creation of the Polish Legions, the Tomaszów citizens erected a modest obelisk on the square at Piliczna street (now ulica Prezydenta Ignacego Mościckiego). When this work was started on the square, the obelisk had to be dismantled. A few years later, thanks to the efforts of the Legionnaires' Union, at the intersection of Józef Piłsudski and Legionów streets, a new monument was built, crowned with the silhouette of an eagle taking flight. Monument made according to the design of Dr. Tadeusz Seweryn was unveiled in 1928. In the autumn of 1939, at the behest of the occupation authorities, the monument was demolished. They hid the brass eagle, and during the entire occupation they were kept by Helena Banach and Józef Czajka. After the war, they gave this souvenir to the magistrate. Unfortunately, later the eagle was lost and his fate is unknown. In 1989 and at the beginning of the nineties, the Circle of the Polish Historical Society undertook attempts to rebuild the monument. Unfortunately, these efforts failed for various reasons. In 2000, the local Pilsudski Union set itself the goal of rebuilding the Monument. Thanks to the Association's activists, the help of many people and the generosity of the Tomaszów inhabitants, it was possible to realize this intention.
