One of the oldest and most valuable monuments of the Old Town of Żary is a stone belfry from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. You can see her in the church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The belfry was built - together with the defensive walls surrounding the city - as one of the defensive towers. For its construction, stones combined with lime-sand mortar were used. Over time, the gothic defensive tower was rebuilt into a bell tower and topped with a high helmet. During the battles for the city in 1945, the belfry was damaged. She lost her helmet at the top, which was not reconstructed, but replaced by an almost flat roof topped with a cross.
