The embankment of the Chełm stronghold was originally much higher, but in 1876 it was laid out. At that time, an entrance from the southern part was also arranged in the form of a wide ramp. The tsarist authorities erected the chapel of St. Cyril and Methodius - a monument to celebrate the liquidation of the union. However, it was not thought to be proud of this monument of tsarist oppression for a long time - after Poland regained independence, in 1921 it was pulled down to its foundations. The pedestal remaining in the chapel in 1928, school children covered the ground, erecting in this place the mound of the 10th anniversary of regaining independence. Scout collections and school events were often held here.
