In the Vistula embankment, under the surface of the earth between the palace and the Temple of Sybil, a string of underground workings was made. The purpose of the excavations was to extract rock material used in the construction of the princely residence. Rocks found in the ground, tertiary rocks and rocks, turned out to be a great and cheap building material, which was also available on site. These excavations, dating from the eighteenth century, were called the Puławy Grotto and considered a historic building.
