The conflict between Poland and Lithuania and the Teutonic Order grew from year to year. On July 15, 1410, a Polish-Teutonic battle took place in the fields near the village of Grunwald.
The Teutonic Order was the first to arrive on the battlefield, along with the knights of European countries. The famous master, Urlyk von Jungingen, stood at the head of the Teutonic army. They chose a favorable plain area. Polish-Lithuanian knighthood came with Czech and Hungarian troops. The Polish army was commanded by Władysław Jagiełło, together with the Grand Duke of Lithuania - Witold. In the morning the king ordered a Holy Mass to be celebrated. The impatient Teutonic master sent Jagelle two naked swords to provoke the fight, as the Teutonic army, standing in full sun and armed (and it was in July), waited for the battle to begin. Meanwhile, the Polish army was stationed in the forest. King Władysław accepted these swords as a sign of victory.
The battle began around noon. The royal troops went to battle singing the song "The Mother of God". The first to enter the fight was the Lithuanian army joined by Polish banners. The ranks of Tatars and Germans collapsed. For the time being, however, the Teutonic Knights kept their advantage, and later the scales of victory tipped in favor of the Poles. Seventeen new enemy banners took up the fight. Polish troops fought a deadly battle with their enemies. The Teutonic Knights began to withdraw. The battle ended with the victory of the united Polish-Lithuanian forces. After the fight, the enemy's banners were laid down before King Jagiełło, and the corpse of Grand Master Urlyk von Jungingen was found on the battlefield.
Thus, the defeat of the Teutonic Order proved that the Teutonic Knights were not invincible.
