Cmentarz Żydowski

The Jewish cemetery in Gorlice is located about 800 m north-west of the market, at ul. Stróżowska. The cemetery is occupied by the geodetic plot No. 120501, 1,017,147, of irregular shape and an area of ​​13,113 sq m, situated on a steeply rising hillside. According to various sources, the cemetery was created in the second half of the 18th century. Bearing in mind the demography of the Gorlice Jewish community, it can be assumed that the above dating is doubtful, and the cemetery was founded only in the 19th century. In 1906, Baruch Halberstam was buried in the cemetery - the fifth son of the tzaddik Chaim Halberstam from Nowy Sącz, son-in-law of Jekutiel Yehuda Teitelbaum from the synagogue, tzadik in Rudnik and Gorlice. His grave became the goal of pilgrimages. During the World War I, a cemetery No. 90 was built within the cemetery, where four soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian army and two soldiers of the Russian army were buried. One of the fallen was infantry Marko Ledermann, serving in the army of the Russian Empire. In the interwar period, the building was surrounded by a brick wall. There were not less than several hundred tombstones and ohels of tzadiks on it. During World War II, the bodies of people killed by Germans in various parts of Gorlice were buried at the cemetery. The cemetery was also a place where Jews were captured in various hideouts in the city and nearby towns, as well as Poles and Roma.
