Cmentarz Żydowski

The Jewish cemetery in Jeżów is located in the eastern part of the village, by the road to Rawa Mazowiecka. The exact date of founding this necropolis is unknown, probably in the middle of the nineteenth century. The cemetery occupies a rectangular plot with dimensions of approximately 40 x 80 meters. According to Monika Borkowska in her BA thesis entitled "Monographs of Jeżowa cemeteries", the object was devastated in the communist period, after the last Jews left the village. Let us quote here a fragment of the study: "The local population stole stone slabs, which were used, among others, for paving streets or yards. In the early nineties, at the initiative of Bernard Gold from Canada, the necropolis was tidied up and fenced. Today, however, the cemetery seems to be completely forgotten. The wings of the iron, long-unpainted gate are connected with a rusty wire. The cemetery is covered with tall grasses and thick bushes of lilac and blackberry, making it difficult to move around its area. In several places there are visible walls of damaged graves. There are no tombstones with legible inscriptions. At the edge of the bushes, on the left side of the entrance, two concrete foundations draw attention - according to M. Borkowska, one of them was erected in the place of the destroyed ohel of the local rabbi or tzaddik, the other is to protect the fragments of matzevot secured in it. An important problem is littering the necropolis.
