The figure of Corporal Wojtek, carved in sandstone, was erected in this place in 2014. The bear was the mascot of the 22nd Artillery Supply Company in the 2nd Polish Corps of General Anders. As a small bear, he was bought for a few canned goods in Iran. Later, he went all the way through Iraq, Syria, Palestine, Egypt and Italy. During operations at Monte Casino, he carried 45 kg ammunition boxes straight to the battle stations. In the years 1947-63 he stayed at the Edinburgh Zoo, where he died.
