The discovery of mass graves in the Katyn Forest was first announced in 1943 by Rudolf-Christoph von Gersdorf, [6] a German representative who occupied the area during Operation Barbarossa. An international commission convened by Germany conducted an examination and concluded that the shootings were carried out by the NKVD in the spring of 1940. In turn, the Soviet Union denied its involvement in what happened.
After the liberation of Smolensk by Soviet troops, a commission of Mykola Burdenko was set up, which, after conducting its own investigation, concluded that Polish citizens had been shot dead in Katyn in 1941 by German occupation forces. This conclusion was the official point of view in the USSR and the Warsaw Pact countries until 1990, when the USSR leadership officially recognized the responsibility of the NKVD of the USSR [7].
The investigation of the Chief Military Prosecutor's Office of Russia, completed in 2004, confirmed the sentencing of 14,542 Polish prisoners of war by the NKVD troika on charges of state crimes and reliably established the deaths of 1,803 people and the identities of 22 of them.
I recommend my favorite park to everyone with all my heart
The monument, unveiled on the 60th anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Poland (17.09.1999), is located in the central part of the castle garden. Originally, it was to be built in the square behind the Grand Theater. The author of the pedestal is Robert Sobociński, who presented in it drawn bodies formed in the shape of a tree crown, referring to the forest with the symbolism and exhumation of the victims of the murder.
A brave place that had to be fought for to be created and for the monument to remain in this place in the center of Poznań.
I do not greet
