In the past, gas plants belonged to the plants that were of key importance to the functioning of cities. Hard coal was distilled in their furnaces, municipal gas was collected in tanks. Today, when high-methane natural gas flows in the gas pipelines, the buildings of the old plants began to perform other functions, and steel tanks usually go to scrap yards. The historic gas reservoir of an old gas plant in Ostrów Wielkopolski, built in 1867, was treated exceptionally. In the tank, which was once a pool with water sealing its bottom and a movable bell-piston floating on a gas cushion, today there are offices of the power company and a bank. During renovation works, brick rooms with a modern interior were erected inside the building. This is an unprecedented case of adaptation of a riveted gas tank for office purposes. This attraction and wonder of architecture can be seen in the city center, at the intersection of Partyzancka and Zamenhofa streets.
