"After the outbreak of the First World War, Russia allied with Serbia, Russia began a general mobilization, Head of the Austrian General Staff Franz Conrad von Hőtzendorf took the preemptive offensive against Russia in the Kingdom of Poland, soon the Lublin area became an arena of bloody battles on August 21, 1914 commanded by General Victor Dankla 1 Austro-Hungarian army rejected the Russians from the Vistula towards Kraśnik After crossing from the south a forested and boggy border zone over Tanwia, in the following days the units of the 1st army stretched on the front line from the Vistula near Annopol to Frampol. At the turn of August and September further fights continued. On 6-9 September, 150,000 soldiers of the Russian army, 90,000 Austro-Hungarian and 25,000 German soldiers took part in the vicinity of the villages of Tarnawka, Zakrzew and Targowisko.
After passing the front, the fallen were buried by the local population on created collective cemeteries. The cemetery under Tarnawka II became the resting place for Austro-Hungarian and German soldiers. In 1915, after the occupation of the Lublin region by the Austro-Hungarian and German troops, this place was tidied up and surrounded by an earth embankment. "

A huge cemetery with an area of 1.32 ha. About 25,000 were buried here. Austrian and German soldiers killed in the Battle of Giełczew. The cemetery is surrounded by an earth embankment, divided into illegible quarters.
