The history of Chełm is strongly associated with the person of Tadeusz Kościuszko. 18 July 1792, when the division of Tadeusz Kościuszko after the battle of Dubienka, which was an important event of the Polish-Russian war, set off in retreat through Roztoka and reached Chełm, where the inhabitants greeted the soldiers with ovation and gave help wounded. At that time, the Chełm voivodeship was established for the first time. However, it took almost 200 years for the inhabitants of beautiful Chełm to commemorate the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the National Armed Forces in the Uprising of 1794. A monument to Tadeusz Kościuszko was erected in the square at Szwoleżerów Street in 1982. On the other side of the street on the slopes of Góra Chełmska there is a war cemetery, and a few dozen meters next to it - one of the best Youth Hostels
