St. Jacek is the only preserved building from the former Dominican monastery complex in Oświęcim.
Built on the basis of a ducal foundation, like the other Dominican buildings, in the first half of the fourteenth century, it originally served as a chapter house - i.e. a place for monks' meetings. In 1594, this chapter house was renamed the chapel of St. Jacek Odrowąż - the then canonized Dominican from Poland, the new patron of the congregation.
The chapel is a two-span structure made of unplastered brick, built on a rectangular plan, with buttresses and a cross-ribbed vault with stone ribs and keystones.
Lovely place. The most beautiful and valuable monument of the entire complex of Salesian Fathers. The object dates from the 16th century. It is worth paying attention to the beautiful stained glass windows. People particularly distinguished for the city were buried in the underground. Unfortunately, they are not open to the public. We came here on a Saturday afternoon, when it was closed, but fortunately we met a very nice Lord who not only opened the door for us, but even showed us around, briefly telling us the history of this monument.
A very important place confirming the centuries-old history of the city of Oświęcim. A must-have cruise trip in Oświęcim! Particularly noteworthy are the extremely realistic stained glass windows and ceiling paintings. I would recommend!
An important place on the tourist map of Oświęcim - a must-visit! One of the oldest historic buildings. If the door is closed then you have to ask the Salesian Plant with a wagon. We recommend!
St. Jacek in Oświęcim is the former chapter house of the Dominican monastery from the first half of the 16th century. The founders are probably buried in the crypt under the chapel: Prince Władysław I Oświęcimski and his wife, Eufrozyna. During the recent conservation works related to drainage in the vicinity of the chapel, the remains of 6 people, including their family, were found. Which proves that the cemetery in the vicinity of the chapel was the burial place of not only Dominicans, but also lay people. I recommend a short visit to the chapel.
