This Levada takes you through a valley with beautiful views. After a little while, I noticed that the path was mostly overgrown with plants and the fences were broken on many places. It seemed like this Levada has perished. At the end of the route there were signs warning for falling rocks AND for prohibiting hikers to walk the path I just came from.

Hard route Monte-Romeiros, the climb was comfortable, we still did well.

It is best to take bus no. 20 up to Monte. (1.95 €) last stop. The bus ride is already a highlight. Then towards the cable car botanical garden. It starts on the right. Only hike there in dry weather, otherwise it is dangerous due to slipping away. No tour for non hikers. Absolute attention is needed at certain points, as it is sometimes not always secured and trip. Great prospects. We loved it. Total 9km, 1000 vertical meters about 3 hours down to the port.

If you have reached the destination Monte by bus - you go to funicular Funchal and crosses the cable car station Monte - Botanical Garden about 300 m further. A little later, the paved path ends in an earth path. Here you will see the branch "Levada Bom Sucesso" a little later. Get ready for a longer descent. The earthy steps are secured with wooden planks - in wet conditions, however, there is an increased risk of slipping and the possibility of a crash. Although many of the vertical meters are secured by ropes - others are relatively free. Vertigo is a plus here. For the steady descent, expect a good hour to reach the Levada Bom Sucesso. There at the levada, the stressed joints can relax a bit. The levada exit is above Funchal, just below the orchid garden, which has been undergoing reconstruction since the forest fire in 2016. There are more interesting Levada routes, this trail here - has been created with much effort and work under the most difficult conditions - that must be praised. From here there is also an excellent panoramic view of Funchal and the harbor area.
