Handy to know: if you arrive near the parking at the top, check first if the entrance there is open. I followed the sign down to the lower (main?) entrance, only to find that that one was closed and I had to go back to where I started from. Entrance 1 euro, I believe, but free on Sundays and holidays. The garden doesn't have a lot of 'features' (apart from two great blooming magnolia trees when I was there in February), but it has an interesting vibe if you can appreciate abandoned, overgrown places with a feel of decay, a spooky looking house that evokes images of a long gone glory, and a gate house (I think) in the style of a fairytale cottage.

Astonishing views, over Funchal bay. A lot of cultural variety from all over the world. All in one place. Large botanical gardens with carpacoy ponds. Historic cultural gardens. Surely recommend it.

After the region took over, the place is slowly recovering years of neglected. Still a long way to go. But as entrance is now just 1€, it's still a nice place, with lots of old trees from around the world. Cleaning up and replanting has begun. In time this historical place will hopefully be restored to it's former glory. And the view from the rose garden, is still amazing. So despite all, still worth a visit.

The place is cool but it need a little more love, some areas seems abandoned, also seems bigger than how really is, there are bathrooms, no place to eat, no easy access to wheelchair, it does count with parking lot

A charge of 1 Euro is very reasoable, but don't expect too much. Having said the rose garden terrace is worth the entrance fee. Wonderful views, and the toilet facilities are good. Some areas need renovating, but there are signs that they are in hand.
