Castle of Vila Viçosa

Incredible medieval castle. Highly recommended.

I love castles in general and have visited a number of them in Portugal. I enjoyed Vila Viçosa. It appears to have been a very large castle at one time, in terms of area, judging by what seems to have been done with the space inside. There is a huge church with cemetery. There are also several small houses and a couple of narrow streets. I have seen cemeteries inside of castles, but not houses and streets. What is a bit lamentable is that the castle inside the walls has gotten somewhat seedy, and some parts (such as stairs to the castle ramparts or walls are partly broken, although it seems it was repaired at one time [needs a lot of work now]). I still think the castle is a romantic place.

The castle contains the town Archaeological and Hunting museum which is staffed by helpful curators, and is well worth a visit.

Medieval castle and renaissance fortress worth to take a look. Has a hunting museum, disregard that, in this day and age it's just stupid.
