The first of four vineyards visted, a short drive from Lisbon, the web site did not say much, google maps showed a run down looking industrial wine production unit, nothing like you would find in the Medoc region or anywhere in Bordeaux for that matter. With much misgiving, we made the journey. Its located on the main road, when you get to Arruda dos Vinhos, drive through, the road then turns left up hill, at this point go straight on and carry on until you come to three desolate looking building. The previous day I called and spoke to Rodrigo and confimed that we would be coming, we were late but no issues, we were the only visitors!. Rodrigo then talked us through their production process, we are talking many million litres of wine but small when compared to the likes of De Fonseca and Bacalhoa which we also visited. The cooperative consist of some 200 hundred members who supply the grape, so the sucess of the or faiures on the part f the vine making process determines the sucess or failure of each of the 200 vineyards. Interesting large concrete vessels and stainless steel cylinders that had electrically driven 360 degree stirrers, not something you would encounter in Bordeaux. I guess the cooperative with the backing of 200 members, it is possible to invest in this type of technology but no optical checking of the grapes, no hand picking either. We were taken to the very large middle building and was surprised to learn that it held many below ground storage tanks holding ten's of thousands of litres of wine. We tasted the reds and was astonished to learn the price, incredible value and very good vine it was. Sadly we could only buy two bottles which was all we could bring back with us to the UK. I believe there are three other similar cooperatives in the region, as with this coop, I think they all deserve a visit. There is no charge and even though it was just the two of us, Rodrigo went to a lot of trouble to explain all, I think we were there for an hour and half or more, many thanks. Rodrio did say that they had a booking for 50 vistors on the Sunday, so those in the know do take the trouble to visist and support the coop. The web site needs updating as do thei premises and with a bit more investment in marketing their product, the coop should acheive a well deserved greater prominence in the market place.
