Castelo de Portel

If you are in Portel, you must visit the castle. It is a small castle, and you can explore the inside. The entrance is free.

We made a spontaneous stop at this castle when we saw it on a hill from the road. It’s a bit tricky to get up to—lots of very narrow roads—but the google directions were accurate. It’s a stunning view up there of the surrounding area and the ruined castle is a sight in and of itself. Not a lot of placards or information to be found, but you feel a part of history here. Orange, olive, and lemon trees scattered around and we had it all to ourselves. I recommend this spot!

Portel is my second home when i was in Portugal, the people from portel are amazing, they are so much friendly, my first Christmas celebrations was there before I never celebrate Christmas day

This is an amazing castle. In its ruined state you can explore the castle and understand what used to be there. The remnants of walls and rooms is very interesting. There are still some small rooms in the castle wall to explore.

Ruins worth a visit on our road trip. Random stop along the way, slightly off the beaten path. Free to enter and explore. No staff.
