Vereda do Larano

An absolutely AMAZING, dazzling hike! Highly recommended! Described as hard and "dangerous" in many reviews but we did not find it this way, most paths had protection and the path was wide enough. Weather was good. You will not regret it! We also started at Porto da Cruz and went to Machico and we liked it this way! Take bus 53 to the start point, there are restaurants there too. One of the BEST walks we've done so far!

If you like to do some tracking, here you get joint that pleasure with one outstanding view. Consider it from some people as difficult to do, specially because if narrow and very high.

Staying in Funchal I travelled to Porto da Cruz on the SAM 53 bus at 10am arriving at 11:35. After a short sea-level walk it was then quite a steep climb which took about an hour. After this the trail was mostly level but quite narrow in places hugging the cliffs on one side with precipitous drops on the other with some spectacular views along the way. Be aware the trail can be quite slippery. At Boca do Risca the trail then goes away from the coast to eventually join the Levada do Caniçal which I followed until just before the Túnel do Caniçal road where I did a u-turn onto the road and then the next road left to Machico for the bus back to Funchal. I find the "walk me, Madeira" app both very useful and accurate with the trails when used with gps/phone.

Gorgeous walk with gorgeous sea cliff views...for sure will do many more times... starting at porto da cruz Larano and finish at machico tunel to caniçal
