A rundown square with not much to see or do... Or maybe not; are you a traveler or a tourist? :) The square includes a romantic garden, two small artificial lakes and a bandstand. Heavily wooded, it is very popular among pensioners looking for a good game of cards, usually "Sueca" (meaning "Swedish female" in Portuguese), a 4 player-partnership point trick-taking card game similar to the German game Einwerfen. Originally called Aguardente Square, named after the distilled spirit that was sold at the market that took place there, its name was changed in 1882 to "Praça do Marquês de Pombal" ("Marquis of Pombal Square"), after Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, 1st Marquis of Pombal. Melo was an 18th-century Portuguese statesman who was Secretary of the State of Internal Affairs of the Kingdom (the equivalent to a today's Prime Minister) in the government of Joseph I of Portugal from 1750 to 1777 and de facto head of government. A controversial figure in his own era, Melo is notable for his swift and competent leadership in the aftermath of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. Some see the Marquis Pombal as a ruthless dictator who imposed his reforms on Portugal. Some are grateful he did.

Uma agradável praça da cidade do Porto, onde ainda se vê os famosos jogos de cartas nos bancos de jardim.
