Very impressive while walking towards it. Milestone for pilgrims. Windy Wien we were there. But beautiful beaches and area.

Fantastic beach, and walking paths and nice restaurants

Monument to the "Braves of Mindelo". When Portugal was invaded by French troops in 1807, king John VI of Portugal and the royal family fled to Brazil, Portugal's largest and wealthiest colony. Born in Lisbon, Pedro I was the fourth child of king John VI of Portugal and queen Carlota Joaquina. The outbreak of the Liberal Revolution of 1820 in Lisbon compelled John VI to return to Portugal in April 1821, leaving Pedro I to rule Brazil as regent. Pedro I later led a revolt proclaiming Brazilian independence 7 September 1822, assuming the title of emperor. During the Portuguese Civil War or Liberal Wars (1828 - 1834), Pedro I of Brazil abdicated in favor of his son, who became emperor Pedro II of Brazil and returned to Portugal as king Pedro IV. With the help of English liberals, a military expedition led by Pedro IV disembarked in this beach on July 8, 1832, and attacked the Absolutist army in Porto led by his brother Miguel. The war would end two years later with Miguel's capitulation. Pedro IV's army of 7500 became known as the "Braves of Mindelo" (Mindelo being a nearby beach), but the real landing was in fact where this monument stands.
