A famous public university located in Coimbra, Portugal, is the oldest university in Portugal and one of the oldest universities in the world. The University of Coimbra was founded in 1290 and is a historic institution of higher learning on the Iberian Peninsula. The ancient capital of the school, Coimbra, is located north of the capital Lisbon and was the capital of Portugal from 1139 to 1260. The University of Coimbra has eight departments: covering many academic fields such as art, engineering, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, sports and technology, and can be awarded three degree levels: bachelor, master and doctor. The University of Coimbra is also the founder and co-founder of the Coimbra Group. On December 7, 2018, Guangzhou International Friendship University Alliance was established in Guangzhou, and Coimbra University was a founding member university of the alliance
