My wife and I booked onto the 3 hour tour, along with my father who was celebrating his 70th birthday. After searching on Google Maps for "buggy tours near me" (we were staying in Quarteira) and from the results I contacted Algarve Buggy Tours through their Facebook page the afternoon before our tour, and they were very quick to respond and courteous during our Messenger chat. At the venue, once we'd signed the documents, we were given masks, a hair net, and then our helmets, which have pull down visors, so no need to worry about eye protection. Don't forget to take your driving licence (or at least keep a photo of it on your phone!). We had good fun on the tour, driving the more upright and more powerful of the two buggy types along a variety of off-road trails that included gravel, sand, rocks, and a dry river bed, with some challenging bits scattered throughout the drive. The route took us to and through places we otherwise would not have seen had we stuck to the more traditional Algarve pursuits, so it provided some interest on that level. We passed along olive and orange groves, small villages, mountain trails, horse ranches, and even a makeshift Moto-X park at one point! As promised, we stopped in a charming mountain village halfway through the drive, where we bought some coffee and snacks. And had a welcome toilet break! Top Tip: Try to make sure you visit the toilet before you leave the base - they have toilets available. Driving the buggies is fairly simple as there's no gears to worry about. They're automatic and have two pedals: accelerator and brake. To be honest, the brake pedal was rarely needed as the engine braking was usually enough to slow the vehicle and we never travelled much faster than 35km/h as the gearing didn't allow them to go much quicker than that. So no need to worry about keeping up. The buggies are all left hand drive, and at times you drive on the main roads to access other trails, so if you are used to driving on the left (i.e. right hand drive in UK, Malta, India, Australia, Japan, etc.) be prepared for this. There are no windows, so expect to get dusty or muddy or wet, or all three depending on the time of year. On our trip it just happened to be the only day it rained (slightly) in two weeks! It didn't bother us too much - the biggest issue was keeping the visor clear, so make sure you bring a cloth or hankie to allow you to do that. Also, don't wear your best clothes. As I said, you will get dirty. This is a guided tour, so you travel in convoy behind the guide. We noticed that during the second part of the tour we were going slightly quicker as the guide knew by this time we were used to the machines. It was difficult to appreciate some of the scenery because driving on the narrow trails in convoy (trying to match speed and braking as well as maintaining distance) takes a fair bit of concentration, so there was little time to look at the view. If you're taking a partner, get them to take pictures and video so you can watch the trip again when you get back. It would have been nice if there was some radios to allow us to communicate with each other in the buggy, and with the tour guide. It's fairly noisy when driving and even with shouting it proves difficult to hear each other. We eventually gave up! Perhaps this is something they can add for the future. If they'd had this, and an option for stopping to take some memorial photos then they'd have had 5 stars. That said, I'd thoroughly recommend the tour to anyone visiting this part of the Algarve. Just don't expect it to be like driving on a rally stage!

Had a great time last week with my seven year old boy. Did the one hour tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. Carlos was a fantastic guide, very friendly and took us on an epic journey up the mountain. Fast at times but always felt safe. Thanks again. Ade and Jake
