Gabinete de Estudos Olisiponenses (Palácio Beau Séjour)

The Palácio de Beau-Séjour stands on the outskirts of the capital, near the Stadium of Light. Once upon a time it was in open country, while today it is surrounded by numerous buildings. It was built in the pompous Romantic Parigino style by the Viscontessa da Regaleira in 1849 on a fifth of the countryside. In 1859 the palace and its gardens were bought by Baron da Glória António José Leite Guimarães, a friend of the Viscountess who had made his fortune in Rio de Janeiro. In 1876 the baron covered the facades of the blue and yellow azulejos palace, and he also made the gardens beautify. On the death of the baron the building was inherited by the nephews Latte José Guimarães and Maria da Glória Leite. They decided to enrich the interiors and called the famous Columbano brothers, Manuel Maria, and Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro, plus the decorator Francisco Vilaça. In the interior stands the canvas The Carnival of Venice placed on the ceiling of the Sala Dourada, due to Columbano Bordallo Pinheiro. Since 1992, the Olisiponenses Studies Office (GEO) has been established, founded in 1954 by the Cultural Services of the Municipality of Lisbon (CML), to allow the study and dissemination of the history of Lisbon through the most varied disciplines and forms. GEO also has an extensive library. It is said that in the palace there were apparitions of a ghost, which moves from one place to another the documents of the Geo.
