One of the greatest museums in Saint Petersburg, and one of the greatest natural museums in the world. This museum traces its history back to 1831 and has one of the biggest collections of this kind, being second only to the British Museum. It has a very extensive systematic collection, as well as plenty of dioramas. Its particular feature is the mammoth collection, it has the only adult mounted mammoth in the world, as well as two baby mammoths on display. Worth to pay a visit, even if your are not a big fan of nature museums. It is located among several other historic buildings on the spit of Vasilyevsky Island, the spot with a splendid view of the Winter palace on the other side of the Neva river. Be prepared that the waiting time may be quite long during the "rush hour", such as school holidays. Knowledge of Russian or Latin is an advantage, since not all the exhibits have labels in English.

Very interesting place!!! Tickets are very cheap. A lot to see (I was there for 2.5 hours). You can learn a lot about animals there (even animals that don’t exist any more!)... you can buy butterflies at the gift shop. They come in all colors and types.

The museum is a great learning experience for kids and adults alike. It’s enriching and not to be missed. The collection is really commendable.

The mseum is huge and its collection extensive beyonf my imagination. The life scences with stuffed animals look very realistic and beautiful. The entrance free is good and it was not extremely busy, even though it was a Sunday. The museum could use an update though and most displays only had information in Russian. I would definitely visit the museum again!
