The chapel in the VRZ park was built to commemorate the 2000th anniversary of the Nativity of Christ and the entry into the third millennium. The place for it was chosen in the historical center of the city, on the banks of the Vologda River. The construction was carried out with donations from residents of the city of Vologda, enterprises and organizations, as well as parishes of churches of the Vologda diocese. The project was made by the architect G.I. Vinogradov.
The chapel was consecrated on July 7, 2002 by His Grace Maximilian, Bishop of Vologda and Veliky Ustyug, co-served by the Vologda clergy. The best city church choirs sang: the temples of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos "at the Marketplace" and "at the Kozlen".
The competition for the design of the memorial chapel was announced in 1999. It took place in two rounds. A total of ten projects participated. The best was the work of the architect G.I. Vinogradov with the participation of A. Porozov.
Initially, for the location of the chapel-monument, it was supposed to use a small triangular area between Mayakovsky and Burmagin streets and the Vologda river. Later it was decided to move it closer to the St. Sophia Cathedral to the area between the VRZ park and the Vologda river.
The foundation stone of the chapel took place on January 7, 2001 - on the day of the Nativity of Christ.
In the architecture of the chapel, the forms of the ancient Russian architecture of the XIV-XV centuries are easily guessed, which makes it akin to the nearby Sofia. The chapel has three through walls, and on the fourth there is a mosaic image of the Vladimir Mother of God with the Child, made by the artist Vladimirsky. The entrance to the chapel is closed with forged gratings made according to the sketches of the architect A. Borisovskiy, who is also the author of the sketch of the cross, made by hot forging with elements of punching and decorative embossing. The area around the chapel has been improved.
The construction of the chapel was carried out with donations from the residents of the city of Vologda, enterprises and organizations, as well as parishes of churches of the Vologda diocese. The chapel was consecrated on July 7, 2002 with a large crowd of people. A metal capsule with a list of the names of all donors is placed in the niche of the concrete bench, covered with an information plate.
The chapel is assigned to the Intercession Bishop's Compound. Services are held on holidays at the site near the memorial chapel.
