One of the oldest museums in the Vologda region, has more than 100-year history. The initiators of the museum's opening were the city head, IA Milyutin, and the scientist-ethnographer, archaeologist, curator of the manuscripts of the Rumyantsev library E.V. Barsov, who presented the city with his archaeological collection and developed the Statute of the museum. The opening of the city museum took place on March 31, 1896. The museum has interesting exhibits and annually there are exhibitions from various museums in Russia.
